Wish they stocked in my IGA, Jane. Although I did buy some of the Black & Gold, which is only 3.9 % sugars. So I figure as it's only ever a treat nowadays, I can use this one.

    Hi

I found some 'Poppy Custard Powder' at my IGA they didn't have the other brand you mentioned, and it has less than 1g of sugar, not sure if they sell this at coles or woolies, haven't been to have a look yet

    Cheers

Unfortunately, Julieanne, my IGA has neither, sad isn't it?  Will just stay with the Black & Gold, don't have it much anyway. Just as a treat.
    Thanks, anyway......

But why use powder??? It is soooo easy to make! You do need cornflour, but most of us have that don't we? Heat some milk and vanilla extract, beat some dextrose and egg yolks and cornflour together (use the whites in cake or slice), add a couple of spoonfuls of the warmed milk to the yolk mix and blend. pour it back into teh milk, stirring over low heat for a few minutes until it has thickened. Of course, I use back yard chookie eggs and raw milk so heaps more flavour, but I'd be certain even those ingredients bought from the supermarket would have to taste better than the powder.

Oh and if anyone isn't consuming chemicals, the 'vanilla flavour' is still likely to be artificial

Hey, Bron, you got the quantity's for that recipe. I think that's why most of us are going for the packet mix, well, I know that's the reason I did!!  hehe...
    Thanks anyway....

yep. 2 cups of milk (or 1 and 1/2 milk, 1/2 cream. I use raw milk so there's loads of cream already in it ;) ). 4 egg yolks. 1 tablespoon of cornflour. dash of vanilla extract (or you can scrape the seeds from a  pod into the milk, heat it and let infuse 10 mins. I prefer the extract cos it's quicker). With the dextrose I use about 1/3 cup. The kids haven't complained it isn't sweet enough so I guess that's enough.

Jane, I read somewhere on the forums that I would find that Orgran custard in Woolies. Was there yesterday. They did have Orgran products, but not sadly the custard Powder, nor did they have the White Wings gluten free one, but I did find the Macro Fruit free untoasted Muesli. 1 out of 3 ain't  that bad. I do think that maybe the Macro brand is a Woolies brand.

I laughed at your last line, as it reminded me of a rude joke my bestie told me once, about 5 years ago now. Whenever she rings me up, that's what she says, instead of Hello, or Hi.!!  So thanks for giving me a little chuckle, made my day!!  hehe
