Soy Milk and cocoa

I'm new to the sugar-free life and was wondering if someone could help me regarding soy milk.  I'm lactose intolerant so I can only drink very small quantities of cow's milk and prefer soy.  I remember reading in Sweet Poison that soy milk was high in sugar.  The label on my high-fibre Vita Soy says total carbs 5.5g per 100g, and is broken down to sugars 2.1g per 100g, lactose and galactose 0g.  Does this mean it's ok to drink?

And given that cocoa is in so many of the recipes in Sweet Poison, does that mean it's ok to drink it as a hot drink?  Is that a really naive question?!

    Thanks for any advice,
    Michelle

Michelle I also cant drink cow's milk. Iv'e been using  PureHarvest Organic Nature's Soy malt free soy milk. Sugar content is 0.7gm per 100ml. And yes cocoa powder is fine, I love it with my hot soy milk. At first it took a little getting used too,no sweetness at all but now I love the flavour. regards Deborah.

Excellent, thanks Deborah.  I've been having them with some dextrose to sweeten up the cocoa a bit.

My concern with soy milk is all the palm oil that is added - usually 50% of the content.  Palm oil is a big issue for me as it is 100% trans fat - and its production is responsible for the near-extinction of the orangutan.  Lactose-free milk is pretty good, I think.

Lizzy, what you said alarmed me so I have done more research into this and PureHarvest malt free Natures soy only has organic sunflower oil in it thankfully .

Hi, Michelle, just to confuse you even more, here is a link to a site from Belgium, telling you how the Western world extracts soy, (not so good) against the traditional way Japan & China has done for centuries. Put the question into your search engine to find more on Soy. I won't have it in the house, & I'm slowly training my DB (dearly beloved, Kevin) to search the ingredients for it If he buys anything with soy in it, he can be sure he will eat it all himself. Educating men is almost a full time job, I'm finding out (haha) , but we're getting there, slowly. He's a bit confused, but I'm slowly getting him to realise that by not buying so much processed food we'll both be a lot more healthy.

I find it too hard (and to expensive) to buy organic soy products, made the traditional way, so just don't have it. It's a bit like High fructose corn syrup, and palm oil.

    Good luck, girl.

Michelle, I also am lactose intolerant but take a lacteeze tablet when necessary to  have some dairy.
I used soy for many years and think the Pure Harvest Malt free is the best, but then someone gave me some rice milk and I use that instead in my coffee.  I have Vitasoy at the moment and it has 3.4gr glucose per 100ml.  Has no taste I find. Contains borwn rice, sunflower oil, calcium phosphate. sea salt.
    Cheers Lesley

I have found that the Aldes brand soy milk -- Inner Goodness -- has only 5g carbohydrate per 100ml and the sugar component of that is only 1.2g per 100ml.

    The ingedients are:

    Water, soy protein isolate(4%), canola oil, maltodestrin, sugar, emulsifier(450), firming agent(509)acidity regulators (526, 504, 332, 338) vitamins (A, B12, riboflavin, thiamin)

I use coconut milk or cream, I am also lactose intolerant.  As stated in David's latest book 'Toxic oils', all of the oils mentioned, in soy milk are not good for us at all, ie canola, sunflower etc., causing cancers and other diseases.  Soy is also not good for us as well.
