I found something similar called Love Notes. Ingredients are Dextrose, Corn Syrup solids and/or Moaltodextrin, Food Acid(citric acid), Stabiliser(470), Flavours, Colours(102,110,129,130) . Are these ok too?

I'm confused: is corn syrup okay?  I understand that HFCS is bad but is just plain old corn syrup free of fructose?  I bought these very lollies the other day as a rare treat for the kids but then I saw the corn syrup in the ingredient list and thought that was one of the baddies...  on page 170 of SPQP corn syrup is listed under 'Unsafe' under agave syrup...  so what gives?  By the way, my packet of Groovy Candy Rolls doesn't say anything about the corn syrup being 'pure glucose'.

    ??

    Mary :)

Good old wikipedia always has the answer :) Corn Syrup (which is made from the starch of maize) is actually good according to here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corn_syrup as Corn Syrup is made up of glucose.  However High Fructose Corn Syrup has gone through a different (enzymatic processing, which means they are changing the molecules) process to convert some of the Glucose to Fructose http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_fructose_corn_syrup.  High Fructose Corn Syrup is only produced because it's sweeter then plain old Corn Syrup.  Corn Syrup is used in foods to soften texture, add volume, prevent crystallization of sugar, and enhance flavor.  So basically they are two completely different things.

Yes, I know about the two distinctions there, what I'm asking is why (both) corn syrup AND HFCS are listed under the 'Unsafe' banner on page 170 of SPQP (go check it out now)...

So which is it: safe or unsafe?

Yeah I have previously checked the book (I carry about the safe and unsafe list in my purse actually) and not unless the Corn Syrup that David is referring to is the HFCS.

Under the 'Unsafe' banner is listed Corn Syrup as well as High Fructose Corn Syrup - David has put them both into the 'Unsafe' category.  So maybe this was a typo?  Is the corn syrup in this product somehow a different kind to the one he listed as being unsafe, and if so, how can you tell a safe corn syrup from an unsafe one?  It's got me very confused too!

I do know that if companies are to be using high fructose corn syrup, that is what they have to put but they did want the name changed to corn sugar but that wasn't allowed.  I wouldn't think there would be a difference other then HFCS and plain old corn syrup.  Maybe just a typo?
