Is coconut water ok to drink. It has 4.7 grams of sugar per 100 mls. I have recently read information on coconut water, and is meant to be good for natural hydration. Also tastes very refreshing.
How much should you have of it. The brand I have is Cocobella. Appreciate some feed back.

I was given a bottle of that type of Coconut Water, it was the Pineapple Flavour.  I actually checked the ingredients and it contained added sugar so check ingredients and make sure it has no added sure.  Comparing Coconut Water and Orange Juice on Food Standards

Orange Juice has a total of 5.6g sugar per 100mls, Coconut Water (young or immature) has a total of 4.7g per 100mls.  Basically Orange Juice has 2.95g per 100mls and Coconut Water has 1.8g Fructose per 100mls.  Wikipedia does mention that Coconut Water does contain significant amounts of fibre, so I would think that as long as it the ingredients doesn't contain any other added sugar it should be fine in small doses, although I can't imagine needing to drink a significant amount per day.

    Hi Janelle & Helen,

I'm just a tad confused.  According to Sarah Wilson of (I quit sugar)fame Coconut Water is sugar-free.  I know it tastes quite sweet so i don't know where the sweetness comes from. On the back of a can of coconut water with nothing else added it still says around 5g sugar/100ml.
    Can anyone help here.
I buy the whole coconut (you can get them in Woolies), put it in the fridge till cold, then open up with a knife and drink.  Its sooooo nice and refreshing on a hot day (I live in Perth).  Once you have drunk the juice from the coconut you can use the flesh in smoothies etc.  There are some recipes in Sarah's e-book but it costs around $15.00. (www.sarahwilson.com.au)

Sarah also mentions free free muesli bars but I have not seen one yet with less than5g sugar/100g.

PS.  I'm only in my first week of sugar-free so am still a newbie.

    Cheers

    Anne

What's wrong with drinking water for hydration, it's free and fructose free and ancient man didn't have canned coconut drink, and only those in tropical areas would have drunk it.
    cheers

Basically coconut water does contain fructose about 1.8 per 100mls, in total 4.7g sugar per 100mls according to food standards http://www.foodstandards.gov.au/consumerinformation/nuttab2010/nuttab2010onlinesearchabledatabase/onlineversion.cfm?&action=getFood&foodID=11B10175 .  If you buy coconut water off the shelf, providing it doesn't have any added sugar (cause some actually do I've seen it), then it should be fine.
