Hello everyone, on an archived version of this site someone asked about apple cider, and I think it was suggested that it's ok.

I think cider brewed only with fermented juice was ok, but I've done a bit more research and haev found a lot of popular ciders, especially the sweeter Swedish ones (e.g. Rekordelig, Kopparberg) actually have sugar directly added following the fermentation process...so these are a BIG no go! I managed to derail a month of fructose free life by thinking these were ok...and then wondering why I was having such incredible cravings for them, and not losing any weight!

So, I think the moral of the story for cider is the same as peanut butter - unless you're 100% sure of the ingredients not including sugar (which for alcoholic drinks is hard to find out), and especially if it tastes sweet...don't drink it!

Has anyone else done any research in to this? Does anyone know of ciders that really are only fermented juice, with no sugar added? I'm not much of a beer fan but would like to find something that's good for casual BBQs etc...

I don't know if its ok, I haven't drunk it since going sugar free to be on the safe side, but there's a New Zealand brand, Monteith's, who claim to make their Pear and Apple ciders by crushing fresh fruit and directly fermenting it, no concentrates.  Their pear cider is absolutely beautiful, and doesn't taste sweet like those other ones do.  I've sent them an email through their official website to try and get information.

I've tried those brands you mentioned before I went sugarfree and I found them too sweet then, so I wouldn't even consider going nearing them now.

I had response about Monteiths Apple and Pear ciders, apparently these are around 4g residual sugars per 100 ml.  They told me however they brew Johnny Arrow Apple and Pear ciders, that are only about 2g per 100 ml.

Strongbow also have a low carb and low sugar that's 2.5 % sugar.
