Hello out there! Anyone? David? Help!

We love our yoghurt and make our own Easiyo yoghurt. We use both the Greek and the Skimmers yoghurt bases. I've been adding granulated Splenda but will stop this now that I've read both books and subscribed to your very interesting and informative website.

I CAN read nutritional information panels but am a little unsure of the exact information the nutritional panels on the Easiyo yoghurt bases are providing. Okay - on the Greek panel it states that there is 6.7 grams of sugar per 100 grams of made up yoghurt. On the Skimmers panel it states that there is 7.4 grams of sugar per 100 grams of made up yoghurt. Of course most of this sugar would be lactose. (Am I on the right track?) In the ingredients listed for both varieties of yoghurt no sugar is mentioned which leads me to think that Easiyo have not added sugar (and hence, fructose).

However, the directions for making the yoghurt tell you to add sugar, honey or artificial sweetener to taste. If you add 'to taste' how can they assess the sugar content per 100 grams?

Is the sugar content as stated on the nutritional panels before or after making the yoghurt? How can it be before making when no sugar is listed in the ingredients and how can it be after making if they don't know how much sugar or artificial sweetener you are going to add, if any? I really want this cleared up so we can continue to make our Easiyo yoghurt (without Splenda!)

If we can sort all of this out and we determine that Easiyo yoghurt is okay, would it be okay to add xylitol or dextrose? Which would be the better option?

    Hi Denise,

The "sugar" on an information panel is the sugar which is actually in the product. If it recommends adding a sweetner, then that information is not factored in because everyone will add whatever they like, even an artifical sweetner which has "no calories."

I have an Esiyo maker, but I haven't purchased those flavours for a while- i've switched to using it to make Kefir drinking yogurt because it's less tart. I'm sure the 6g is lactose. Just look at the ingredients- if sucrose or sugar isn't mentioned, then its milk sugar and ok.

Personally i am only using glucose or rice malt to sweeten anything, if it really needs it- I taste it first. Is that other sweetner you mentioned an artifical one? I'm off them as they give me stomach pains and worse.

    Best wishes,

    Dennise F

I use the easiyo yoghurt all the time, I think it's great.  I do quite like the greek yoghurt one but I'm also quite fond of jalna as well.  Not sure about adding dextrose while your making it up I would be more inclined to add it afterwards or just do one as a test run first but it should be ok.  The consistency may just be more "solid" then comared to normal yoghurt.  I just have it as it is and add some blueberries afterwards.  After a while you do get used to the taste, but I find greek yoghurt is better then the normal one.
