    Hi all,
I had bought an ice cream- lemon sorbet a few weeks ago in Coles I cannot remember for the life of me the brand, I *think* it was Hudson's or made by Homer Hudson, it had no added sugar I clearly remember because I can't eat fructose and it had the 950 and 951 sweetners. I will try to chase it down again, it was in Coles Crows Nest, can't find anywhere else.

Is this sort of ice cream allowed, or must it be completely free of sweeteners? I can't work out if when going cold turkey we are allowed artificial sweeteners or not. I thought these were only brought out during withdrawal, but David mentions that when he went cold turkey in the book that he had Pepsi Max.?

    cheers,
    Nicky

    Nicky,

I like to think of the high intensity sweeteners as methodone for sugar addicts.  I wouldn't consume them long term but having them around is a great way to break down the habits assocaited with eating sugar.  If you always relax on the couch with a treat at night, then replacing the treat with something that doesn't contain fructose is a lot easier to do than not sitting on the couch and relaxing at all (its much harder to break an addiction if you still do all the things that involved eating sugar, but if you want to keep doing it without the sugar then sweeteners are the way to go).

What that allows you to do is wean yourself of the sugar.  Pretty soon your tastebuds adjust (after a few weeks) and you'll find that the sweeteners don't taste that nice anyway and you don't need them to enjoy the treat of relaxing on the couch ... so then you delete the sweetener ...

I hope that's some sort of help?

    Cheers

    David.

    Hi David,

Thank you that really does help!!.
I went today and found it, it's called Gelati Italia Lemon sorbet. can't find a link to it, it is indeed made by Hudson, i took a photo not sure if this will work (can we attach images?)

It doesn't have added sugar but it does indeed have 950 and 951.

My other question, what if i replace this with a dextrose based lemon ice block? i got some dextrose today, since i'm going 'cold turkey' i thought instead of going for the artificial stuff i could start dextrose, but i am not sure if it's best to wait until the withdrawal is over to start with dextrose?

that's where i'm confused, if dextrose stuff is allowed at the beginning when going cold turkey and during 'withdrawal'

thanks so much for answering though!!:D

I noticed in the ingredients it lists Maltitol and polydextrose, I believe they are not good.
