Lizzie and I definitely used gradual withdrawal ... kinda in this order:
1. All obvious sugar gone (eg lollies, softdrinks, juices etc) (and none in the lunchboxes)
2. Breakfast cereal review and gradual weaning to less sugary options
3. Condiment replacement (that's how we came to be making up a recipe for dextrose tomato sauce)
4. Rules for parties 1 x softdrink then switch to diet or water - go for chips over lollies
They're still not completely sugar free (outside the house) but their palates have adjusted to such an extent that they struggle to eat much sugar anyway (if given the chance).
Cheers
