How Much Sugar?

Need a 'Boost'

Why do I feel like the worst mother?  I have written about my amazing kids (12 & 15) and their willingness to approach life without much sugar.  But this afternoon we were at the local food court and 12 asked if he could have a "juice boost".  Months ago we looked at the NIP for his former favourite and the horror of 63gm of sugar made me think he had wiped it off his agenda all together.  I said 'no' and as a tear almost rolled, he said "mum, we have been doing this for months and you mean I will never ever even taste a boost again?".  We left with a pepsi max, but not satisfied.  I am asking you (whomever is listening) should I bend a bit sometimes? I am fearful they might return to their high sugar days where I estimate 100gm/day would not have been unusual. I allow them a  mini magnum (14gms sugar) a couple of times a week if they have not eaten much sugar in that day but 63gms was just against my new religion!  What would have happened if he had the boost, not the end of the world I suppose.  I just have a sad little 12 now and now I want to cry!  They know they feel better without the sugar, should I just trust that they can have these things occasionally?

David, can you write to COKE and get them to put COKE ZERO in their frozen slurpies? - this would definitely satisfy 12's needs, I think.

    Hi Sarah
I second the motion for a diet coke or coke zero slurpy.... how grand would they be in summer!!!
As for the boost juice.... even though juice is a big 'no no' maybe it could be a once a month or once every other month treat and just a small serve.... i think it would be harder for kids to grasp that this is a life choice... I remember hearing my folks say your school years and all the friends you have when you are there are the best of your life (some may argue this) and not believing them until I was out of school... so a big thumbs up to your two for giving it a go... I know at their age I wouldn't have and probably would have said something like I have forever I am only 12 I can do this later, not understanding that it would be better for me in the long run and actually getting that concept mentally when I was older.
    Good Luck
