Kids and sugar?

    Hi everyone,

I was wondering what to do when one of my children does cooking at school once every week, usually including some sort of dessert?

This child is a little over weight, but I think would feel a little left out if she didn't eat the treats they bake!

And when my children are invited to a party?

Should I just allow them to have the "normal" party food for that day?

Help! Any ideas would be appreciated!

    Hi There!

I have almost five year old twin boys, and we love baking together (cakes, etc.).

I've just started substituting the sugar in the recipes for dextrose powder - the kids still eat it and it tastes good to me (hubby, still addicted, says it tastes a bit bland).

Could you try asking the school if your child can substitute cane sugar for dextrose (and explain why)?

Parties - I would tend to let them eat what is there (per the "Party food is for parties" rule), as long as they understand that this is just because it's a party, iykwim?

I'm actually about to cater the twins' fifth birthday party and trying to work out if I can make the whole party fructose free without being called a wet blanket!

    Thank you Katherine, great ideas!!!

It's so hard when you have kids, to not look like a "wet blanket" to other parents and teachers.

Please let us know how you go with your twin's party and what foods you serve!

Our twins just turned 7 and had 30 of their friends over for a party ... Lizzie decided the whole thing was going to be fructose free (and home made) - I'm typing up the Kids' Party set of recipes she developed as we speak and I'll post them on the site this week ... stay tuned ...

    Here's the menu -

    • Pizza Wheels
    • Hotdogs (without the bread rolls these can be a wheat free option)
    • Sausage rolls with sauce
    • Chocolate Crackles
    • Marshmallows (also a wheat free option)
    • Ice cream cake
    • Vanilla cake with mock cream icing
    • No sugar lemonade (given our time over we would have done dextrose Chocolate milk, but lemonade was limited to the table and water was served at other times)

    Cheers

    David.

Our 9 year old disagrees, she says they are no fun at all :)

David would love the recipe for pizza! although i have to eat gluten free i make mine with cornflour and riceflour, but i was worried that with yeast we need to add 1 tspn of sugar to make it rise.. do you omit this step in pizza/bread recipes?

    cheers,
