How Much Sugar?

sugar free cough lollies

    We are all getting the dredded sore throats.  Are there sugar free cough lollies/soothers.  I have sugarless vitamin C.  If yes where do you get them.

    Yet another thing you don't think about and now will have to go throught some withdrawal I suppose.

    round here we just crush up some panadol in glucose syrup and suck it off the spoon ... seems to do the trick!

    Hi Jan, I have made toffee a couple of times for kids and it would be easy to just add a quantity of eucalyptus to the mix and make your own. I don't have a particular recipe but it's not rocket science. Toffee, butter toffee - and even honeycomb (a request from someone at work who can't seem to get off the sugar) is easy with glucose.

    Start by putting a cup of dextrose powder in a small saucepan ( I also add a couple of tablespoons of rice malt syrup as well but it wouldn't be necessary for what you want). Melt over medium heat and let simmer until it reaches 'hard ball stage' - keep a saucer of cold water beside it and as it cooks, give it an occasional stir and let a drop or two fall into the cold water. Give it a few seconds and pick it up and eat it - when it's crisp, it's done.

    Glucose seems easier than sugar for this stuff - you don't have to wash down sugar crystals with a pastry brush etc etc - it's also very quick to cook so keep an eye on it and decant as soon as it's done or it will burn with the heat of the saucepan.

    You would have to decide the quantity of eucalyptus to add (I'm assuming here that 'double D' eucalyptus is OK for oral consumption - I know some people use to put a few drops onto sugar and eat it for the same reason) and how you want to decant it - either pour onto a tray lined with baking paper and break it up once set, or put into individual moulds (I think there are some tiny foil ones about these days - probably expensive though for a single lolly).

    Soak pan in hot water straight away - add a good splash of vinegar to dissolve stubborn bits.

    Thanks guys for those hints.  I did find Difflam make sugar free in a variety of types and flavours but they are very expensive.  I will try them next time.  Hopefully winter has gone and if we are healtier may not get so many bugs.
