Hi David....Dr Mark Hyman says that he is into Functional Medicine and has a book out called "Blood Sugar Solution Cook Book". He talks a lot about Diabesity - which is connected to Overweight, Type II Diabetes, SUGAR ADDICTION, and he has a lot of supplements and vitamins which he promotes for sale and he does lectures etc.

He does lots of videos with [to me anyway] lots of confusing stuff and he is selling stuff big time. His web address is drharman.com if you would like to do some research! He is also on Twitter and Facebook. His first book was 'The Blood Sugar Solution' and was to help people achieve 'Total Health and Weight Loss'. I was extremely pleased to find him and his stuff about sugar because I am diabetic Type II and my GP keeps telling me that your assertionj about sugar was based on misinterpretation of some wildly imaginative research to explain the obesity of the nation and it was not good science at all!

I have also come across some research at UNSW about weight loss [they only did testing of young and comparatively fit and healthy females] where they used Interval exercise patterns of 12 seconds REALLY fast bike riding alternating with 8 seconds of medium pace - the sessions went for 20 minutes and eventually they reckoned that anyone could lose the visceral fat on the belly by doing this program on an Exercise bike. One of the things that the Prof who was conducting the program said quite definitely was that 'eating fat did NOT make you fat' and eliminating fat from your diet did not help you lose any weight at all!

Unfortunately all the Dieticians in this part of NSW don't know any of this and I have the additional handicap of having no thyroid so I am on Thyroid supplement. The program at UNSW was being conducted by people in the Endocrinology area of medicine.

    Hi Laurice,

Dr Michael Moseley did a segment on an SBS  program [ The Truth About Exercise ] recently on this subject: http://www.sbs.com.au/documentary/program/1087   Well worth watching on SBS-OnDemand.

I couldn't access the Dr Harman  web site. Only a long list of advertisement links.

If you want to know everything about fructose metabolism watch Prof Robert Lustig's YouTube lecture http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBnniua6-oM

If you search David's blog http://www.raisin-hell.com/2011/02/heart-foundation-says-sugar-isnt.html  you will find an article pointing out the misinformation put out by the Heart Foundation and the Dietitians Association.

Hi guys .... I am wondering if all these so called Dr's who are promoting sugar as a safe option are somehow being sponsored by the sugar industry?

It seems to me more and more people are now becoming aware of the dangers of sugar and maybe just maybe these sugar companies are running scared?

Has anyone seen the latest range in Coles Supermarket   "Simply Less"  promoting this range for your health and wellbeing?  Have not looked at the ingredients so am really curious.

It is true that mainstream medicine is becoming increasingly aware of the dangers of fructose as evident by the number of books and even TV programs on the subject, not to mention the 1000s of academic papers.

So the marketers follow.. They have to show the total "sugars" in edible products these days, in many countries at least.  but in Australia  they still don't have to tell you which sugars. Some manufacturer are also stating to split the fats into SF/MUSF/PUSF/TF.  PUSF > 2% is bad news.

More "sugar-free"  products are appearing in supermarkets. But we have to remain vigilant as many of them have sweetened the products with unacceptable ingredients. A case in point is a range of sugar-free biscuits offered by ALDI recently which contain 21% malitol. This metabolises to 50% glucose & 50% fructose, so you're no further ahead!
