Browsers are such a pain, but I use Firefox 3.6.8 too and I had no problem in opening them by right click - Open link in IE Tab plus - switch rendering engines.  (IE Tab might be an optional add-in for Firefox - I cant remember).  Usually though I just download the PDF and then open it (Foxit is a fast free pdf viewer).
