Does anyone know what maltose or is it maltodextrin? can be used for?  I'm thinking of getting some as I read someone say it was really good, but can't remember what it's good for!  I'm thinking in a smoothie or porridge?

Had anyone used it or does anyone have recipes with it in it?

Here is a link to a new site I just found, called wiseGEEK. Link here:-

    http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-maltodextrin.htm

I use Rice Malt Syrup as a substitute for Golden Syrup, honey and the like. I haven't tried in on porridge yet myself, but it's on the agenda, but others who have tried it say it's good.

I use it in the Anzac biscuit recipe, they are really sweet to my taste.

The wiseGEEK link gives you answers to any other questions you may have

I just went in & typed in maltodextrin in the search box.

    Good luck with it all.

I'm not referring to rice malt syrup, I'm talking about powdered malt (the stuff they use in beer making).

Anyway, I've used it in heaps of things over the last few days. It's supposed to be very nutritious too, and it's sweet so anything that needs sweetening it is good for.

I just replaced a quarter of the dextrose in the chocolate ice cream recipe out of the quit plan with malt powder and the ice cream is delicious.

I've used it in porridge, and I intend to use it next time I make a cake or muesli bars.  And in a smoothie one day soon.

Nadine, I found an interesting site on how they extract the malt from the barley. Link here:-

Still trying to find out if it has any fructose in it, but I shouldn't think so, if it's from barley.  Only my opinion, though!!!  Wikipedia also has a lot on it, but nothing that says how much fructose is in it, if any.

Just read the wiseGeek page. This malt powder looks like it is actually a flour. So it shouldn't have any sugar in it. As it comes in packets in the home brew section it should have an ingredients panel on the pack. Sounds to me like it is a natural sweet item that we can all use

Rice Syrup is really nice on wheat biscuits for breakfast, on pancakes, scones with butter and as a substitute for honey on toast etc (much nicer than honey i think)
