Gidday out there in sugar free land , you all sound so wonderful. I bought Sweet Poison over six months ago, went off sugar for a week, and caved in to an icecream, seeing as I put on weight in that week. Thanks to you wonderful people sharing your stories, I am about to kick of again this Saturday, (going out with a dear old friend for a farewell citrus tart and coffee). I have learnt that carbs were my problem, just thought as a savoury fiend, no worries give up the sugar and hoover down the savoury shapes and chips....................

Anyway just wanted to say a hello, and thanks for all your honesty , and ideas.  Anyone who has some snack ideas, please let me know, ps I am not a vege lover.

    Regards to all Dee

Good on you Dee. Is SP the only book of David's you have bought?  If so, I seriously suggest  buying SP-Quit Plan. It is loaded with lots of great "how to" recommendations. It includes lists of 10-best & 10-worst in many food categories, as well useful lists of the various types of sugars, which helps you make sense of the NIPs (nutritional information panels) of foods in the supermarket. These are worth copying and carrying with you when shopping.

Some of your comments seem to imply that you are "giving up" eating sugary stuff. As with quitting smoking, this is the top of the slippery slope. Don't "give up" anything - just think of the positive outcomes your "new way of life" will bring you. And if you do get cravings, the best way of dealing with them is to distract yourself - they'll go away in a few minutes.

The SPQP has lots of snack ideas, nuts being a popular one. A small piece of fruit is another - but no more than two a day. I have Cruskits with cream cheese and Vegemite for morning tea and an Arnott's Lattice  biscuit (11% sugar) in the afternoon. When out shopping etc I have plain toast with Vegemite with my coffee. Sometimes a plain scone - I don't think they have much sugar in them. For pre-dinner nibbles with a glass of wine I have potato chips (check the sugar and polyunsaturated fat content) or Snax (ditto).  You, or the cook, can also make up the sort of snack biscuits with toppings you get served at afternoon teas etc. Use low-sugar bix.

In David's books, and on this web site, there are many delicious ecipies which do not include fructose. And you can often just substitute x cups of cane sugar with 2x cups of glucose. You can buy it in the home-brew section of the supermarket.

Another piece of "advice" . . . get to love vegies! They are very low in sugar and many make nice snacks, like carrots, celery sticks and ?

FYI I'm 80yo, 185cm tall, 78kg & 96cm waist. I'd like to get that down to 94cm, as all men should to avoid a build-up of fat around the vital organs [80cm for women].

When attending dinner etc parties remember "party food is for parties" - you can have a little pig-out [piglet out?] but don't get carried away!  And, like over imbibing wine, you can go extra easy the next day on sweet stuff.

I'm not sure about this, but I sense that when you do pig out, the fructose has an immediate effect on your appetite-control system, and you put on  a kilo or less almost overnight. Being extra careful over the next few days makes it go away.

Thanks John for the reply.  Love the cream cheese and vegemite idea, I have more chance of loving and enjoying a root cannal at the dentist more than vege's, been that way for 47 years and cant see that changing.  Ha Ha.

Will purchase the book of Davids you mentioned, by the way just wondering do you restrict the amount of fat you eat?  I saw the story about Peter Fitzsimons bash at giving up sugar and he seamed to be scoffing into eggs and sausages, not sure about this >>>

    Kindest Regards Dee

Once you appetite-control system is working you can eat any fat you like - but David recommends avoiding polyunsaturated fats - see Big Fat Lies.  The hormones in your stomach will tell your brain when you have had enough and I you won't want any more.   This is true of all food, including fats.

Peter Fitz did a whole Sun_Herald article on Sweet Poison a few weeks ago.

And check some of these links:

Don't give up on quitting fructose!

    Dear John,

( Hey my first Dear John letter Ha Ha )

Thanks for the links and info you sent, and dont worry I am still giving up the fructose, and looking forward to it.  Have been busy reading the site, and the sweet poison book, and am just starting the menopause and am exciteded to see, that giving up the fructose can be very beneficial for ladys going through this.  Suppose you cant help me with that one....

Anyway my mate, your a star and cant thank you enough for the help, and nice to have a buddy to help with the questions. Hope your doing well and sugar free.  Shopping day for me tomorrow, have a feeling it will be a long day in Woollies.

    Kindest Regards Dee

Well done Dee, I found the first two weeks were the worst, then it just all fell in place. The people that contribute to this site are amazing and if you go thru the forums, you will have so much choice, you won't know where to start. I am the shopper (groceries) for my house, it seems daunting at first but I now can shop at Woolies or any supermarket and get anything I want. You will learn very quickly, so keep at it. You will lose weight and inches in places you thought you would never lose it.

    Thanks so much Colin,

Shopping definatley did take a bit of time, but well worth it. End of day two and going strong. Still not loving my coffee without sugar, but it was a little better today.  Feeling a bit tired, and hard to explain but a bit numb , guess thats the Fructose Devil saying send us some sugar. Support like yours is terrific, and lovely to hear from another FF super star.

    Kindest Regards Dee

Hi Dee I'm a newbie too. On day 2 but have gone sugar free in the past but not the right way now I have read the book.  I use stevia in my tea as this is the one thing I love a good cuppa but have cut it down to 1/2 sachet.  I lashed out at the farmer market and bought MYSELF some 100% peanut butter no addatives so I am looking forward to that on cruskits.

All the best with your new journey look forward to hearing more.

I have a dull headache today but otherwise o.k.  Nice bowl of homemade soup for lunch should fix that.

    Hi Cheryl

Great to make a new sugar free buddy.  Yeah those headaches can be a bit of a pain, had a ripper yesterday , day six for me .  But today on day seven, no headache and I seem to have lost the dull buzz that has followed me around for the last six days. I weighed myself today after my first week and have lost 1 kilo, hope I dont find it under the couch tomorrow Ha Ha. I went hardcore and gave up my sweetner in my coffee, and still tastes like hell, but I guess it will get better. I was a white chocolate fiend and to tell the truth I feel as if I ate even one square it would blow my head off my shoulders.

Never thought I would not want White chocolate.

Keep in touch and stay strong Kindest Regards Dee

    Hi Dee

No headache today. Have made the anzac slice yum and the choc biscuit but they are a bit dry but I can still get them down with a cuppa. Because I have been trying to go sugar free for a while much easier this time. Hubby pulled out of the freezer mudcake from his birthday and I did not eat it not even a lick of the chocolate.  Little does he know I am slowly changing what he eats as he has more of an addiction than me. Talk soon.
