How Much Sugar?

Why are you 'here'?

I'm just curious as to what the motivation is for most people here to give up sugar. I'm doing it because I've seen time and time again the affects it has on me, I've just never taken the next logical step and connected it to an addiction of a toxin. I'm not doing this to lose weight, I expect that will come with time, but it's not my primary motive, I'm here to have good health into old age. What I've noticed about my body after binges on sugar is the number of old age symptoms I have but as soon as I stop having sugar, it all goes back to normal - yeah, I know I should have learnt by now. So what is your main motive for doing this? Michelle

    Hi Michelle,

Why am I here?  Good question.  Many reasons if I really think about it.  I am big on health, I believe I live a fairly healthy lifestyle so when the sugar issue was brought to my attention I wanted to know more.  Once I read the book, it was like wow, this makes total sense!

One of the key points in the book that just seems to stay in my head was about when you consume sugar it effects your immune system for the next 5 hours!  As a mum, I personally am constantly exposed to all sorts of 'wonderful' bugs brought home by my children and I hate being sick.  So the thought that I have actually being sabotaging my own health flawed me, so that one point is now a massive reminder to me to live sugar free.  I also want my children to live their best lives hence they will also become sugar free (slowly - they won't even be really aware, they are aged 2,5 and 8).  Interestingly my husband and kids have all had colds/coughs for the past week and a half, to date I am still fighting fit which is very exciting to me to think that I have remained strong because there has been no sugar in my diet to lower my immune system!

Besides the immune system health, and wanting to remove sugar from my diet if it has no health benefits I also want to loose weight.  I have always struggled being over weight and in the past I have really had to work hard to loose it only to put it slowly back on again after each child! I have so far lost 2.4 kgs so am already on my way and very excited about this.  My father is a type 2 diabetic and I don't want his massive health problems.  I also want this way of life for my husband as his father has had 2 heart attacks and is also type 2 diabetic.

Ultimately I want to enjoy and live my best life, I have 3 beautiful children and a loving husband that I want to be there for and not experience all the massive health problems we see so often today, if I can avoid or certainly lower my risk of alot of diseases and health issues I think I would be crazy not too!

    Cheers,

    Nicole

    Hi everyone,

I've been reading everyone's comments for over an hour now and know I have made the right decision to quit sugar.  I've been sugar free for almost 2 weeks.  My sister has Type 2 diabetes and a few weeks ago my blood test showed my bsl as 7.4 so I decided there and then that I didn't want to follow in my sister's footsteps and just accept that this was my lot simply because it was in my family.  I like everyone else it seems, have been on every diet and always managed to lose the kilos only to regain them when resuming "normal eating". Just over a year ago I had my gall bladder removed (probably unnecessarily) because of gallstones and have been slowly gaining more and more weight.  I am 60, 5ft 2in tall and weighed 78 kgs 2 weeks ago.  Since starting the sugar free way of life I have managed to lose 1.5kg and my bsl was down to 6.9 today.  Just small improvements but I feel there is light at the end of the tunnel.  I too have my bad days when I seem constantly hungry but then it seems to come good.  I have started to keep a food diary as I think we sometimes don't realise how much we eat in a day unless it's written down. Thank you David for the books.  I haven't read the first one, just the second (two times and on my third now).  I have written out all the tables and carry them with me everywhere until I completely kick the habit.  Good luck everyone.  I will check in again soon  (with more good results I hope!)  Until then, bye for now,
