    Hi All,

I heard David speak on 702 yesterday and what he said made a lot of sense. Over the past 10 years I have tried and failed to lose weight and keep it off. It is very frustrating.

I know that sugar is addictive. I know how crappy I feel when I first cut back on sugar and then when I start eating it again. It is really interesting, and a little scary, to know more about what is going on.

It occurred to me that I have been doing it all wrong. I cut out fat, cut down obviously sugary stuff and try to exercise more. It works for a while and I loose  a little weight but then I put it all back on again, plus a bit. And I graze. I'm always looking for a little something else to eat.

So I'm going to cut out sugar. I started today. I don't feel deprived at all. I ate well and I feel OK, just a little bit of a headache in the background. So here's hoping that this is the first step towards some serious change for the better.

    Hi Lisa

I started today as well and feel excited about this possibly being the answer, my story is much the same as yours, cutting out fat and cutting down on obvious sugar , exercising and getting nowhere much.  I am just reading sugar labels today and have eaten well, I feel a bit.... bland..   and know that this time of night i would normally be looking for something sweet.  No headache yet.  I have eaten a lot today as out of habbit i keep going to the kitchen!!! I have chosen sugar free things to eat but lots of them :( I guess i had better watch that !!!

Hope you'll stay in touch as i am sure lots of people may have begun today after all the television and radio yesterday :) and its interesting to know how others are coping :)

I too have had the yo-yo dieting.  I have tried everything under the sun and when I actively read the sugar labels, I was horrified at how much sugar I had been eating and drinking.  3kg per week.
I am about to go to bed and am excited about what tomorrow will bring.

I am not feeling so bland as I purchased some garlic salt, mixed herbs for other flavours and also some cinnamon for the nutty sweetness.  This should be interesting.  Now I just need to find the gluscose powder.

I am also also thinking of keeping a diary of what I eat on a daily basis, just to keep a track of it all.

    Regards

    Hi Heps and Alonya,

It was really good to hear that you are starting too. I will look forward to catching up on how you are both going.

I think the diary is a great idea Alonya.

I also relate to being careful about quantities of sugar free stuff. I admit when I was listening to David on the radio I was thinking maybe I can cut out sugar and compensate with plain potato chips. But that's not on is it.

I hope you both go well on day 2,

    Lisa

    Hi Lisa and Alonya

I was excited to get up this morning !! I realised yesterday on my search for sugar in my food that i had been eating massive amounts of sugar in my quick sachet oats that were golden syryp flavour and today had original flavour which was only 1 % fat !! and i hardly noticed the difference.

Thanks for the tip Alonya on garlic salt and flavourings, thats a good idea to spice things up a bit :)

I spent ages in safeway yesterday looking at labels and only ended up with about 5 things in my trolley !! i did find some bread that was less than 1g of fat so i was excited about that, I looked around for someone to tell but no one was excited like me !!! he he heee.  I saw one lady grab a loaf of 30% fat bread and considered tapping her on the shoulder but  decided not to ..hahaa

    Good luck today guys

love Heather  (Heps) email me directly if you would like to ..be ..less public :)

    Hi Heps and Alonya,

Well? How did day 2 go?

Mine was a bit crappy because I left my lunch on the kitchen bench so my carefully planned leek and potato soup and my fruit snack were no help at all. I couldn't get anything sugar free at work. Freddo frog fundraisers and sweet biscuits were about it. I stuck to cups of tea.So by the time I got home at 3.30 I was ready to eat anything.

I ate left over lentil pasta, lots of it. No fructose though. But it makes it difficult to know whether I felt off because of lack of sugar or because of lack of food generally. Tonight I plan to have an early night and see if I feel better after a sleep.

I don't work tomorrow so I'm looking forward to having a good look in the supermarket like you did today Heps. Which bread was good? I need to plan meals for the weekend because I will have visitors staying. I want to feed them well but I want to do sugar free too. I'm looking at the strawberry ricotta cake recipe.

I'd love to know how you went. Hope it was all good.

    Lisa

Day 2 !! I am eating so much food !! I am just so hungry, I have not had any sugar and other than being so very hungry all the time, and eating truck loads of crackers with hommus (by the way i had never had hommus prior to this) now... I cant get enough of it !!

I have been really bloated but that has eased and now i am just eating tooooo much.. is this a symptom i wonder of giving up sugar? no headache yet thankful

    How are others going?

    Hi Guys,

Loved reading all your comments. I have also just started a few days ago and am feeling pretty good. Sick of yo-yo dieting and want to once and for all get this sugar addiction out of me and hopefully this will be the last diet ever.  I have been doing what David mentioned and thats substituting my sugar fix with Pepsi Max - hopefully I will give this up to.  I sort of feel guilty eating high fat foods that are obviously sugar free - ie advocado and was wondering if there are any restrictions on these??? Does anyone know??

Good luck to all of you.

    Hi there

Oh I hear you with the Pepsi Max and avacado !!! I cant seem to get enough of it..  I too intend to go off the pepsi max when i kick this thing :)

It would be interesting to know how much fat is too much, I hope I am not counter balancing my lack of sugar with ramped up fat intake !!!

Good luck for the weekend all

Hello Everyone,  I heard David on the radio too!  Just happened to be doing a long drive and on goes the ABC talkback.  I was enthralled.  Now I am back home and have begun the sugar-free living.

Several months ago I changed from fruit toast for breakfast to porridge and today I changed my porridge with brown sugar to just shaking on nutmeg, ginger and cloves from the spices in the pantry.  MUCH nicer.

Good luck to you all and please feel free to contact me too as I'm enjoying your discussion.
