Does anybody know where you can get "Dextrose" in the brisbane (northside better) area.

What is the difference to straight Glucose? Is it sweeter?

I'm about halfway though "Sweet Poison"

    Ross,

Welcome to the forums!   I hope you're enjoying the book.

You can get dextrose in most supermarkets in Brisbane (Woolies and Coles definitely).  You'll find it in the home brew section and it will be labelled Dextrose Monohydrate.  It will be in a 1kg bag and it will cost about $3.

It is the same as pure glucose (often marketed as Glucodin and sold in 1kg bags - $8 - in the sports drink section).

    Cheers

    David.

    Hi David,

After reading David's book I bought Dextrose in my local supermarket (Adelaide) - Coles I think but had to do a bit of searching for it - not all supermarkets have the same stock.  It was in the home brew section.    When I got it home I opened the pack, stuck my finger in to try it (washed of course) and could not taste much sweetness at all - I was still consuming regular sugar at the time.    And there it sat on my pantry shelf.  A silent reminder patiently waiting until I came to my senses.

Recently I came across "The Power of Protein"  by Chris Smith which tied in nicely with what I had read in Sweet Poison (not that I ever doubted the veracity of David's book) and started on the high protein, low carb eating plan which cuts out all carbs except a few vegetables and sugar free treats in the initial two weeks.   I am now into week three.  Recently I received a Sugar in Cereal update from David, subscribed as a member and found the glucose alternative sweets which I much prefer to sugar substitutes ( I figure they must be healthier) although I haven't tried them yet.

To cut a long story short I went back to the pantry, stuck my (clean) finger in the Dextrose again and noticed a pleasant sweetness.

So in answer to your question, you probably won't appreciate the taste until you have stopped eating anything containing sugar thereby excluding fructose from your diet.

They are both carbohydrates so would assume they are the same - that is 4 calories (approx 16kilojoules) per gram.   To my understanding anything we eat is either a carb, a protein or fat.

Protein has the same number of calories/kilojoules per gram and fat delivers 9 calories/kilojoules per gram.  So you can see where the low fat diet craze comes from.  Gram for gram fat delivers more than double the calories than carbs and proteins - but how the body metabolizes the food we eat and more to the point how each of our bodies reacts to different foods is the puzzle each of us needs to solve to achieve long term weight loss.
