HI everyone, my name is Julie and I joined the site yesterday after reading the first book. Ive scrolled through the forum which is really good - its answering a whole lot of my questions as I go.

Im about 30kg overweight and Ive done everything out there, but this makes a lot of sense to me about eating whole foods and not eating processed foods. I had actually started to do that a few weeks ago before reading the book, and have already lost a few kilos! Yay me!

Just one question I hope someone can help me with? When Im looking at labels on food, the sugars are usually listed under the Carbohydrates section. Do I need to take any notice of the actual amount of Carbs on the label, or is it just fine to read the sugar bit (is it less than 3 per 100g that Im looking for??).

    Thanks :-)

    Julie

    Hi Julie,

Welcome, and congratulations! You're on your way to freedom.

By "the first book"  I presume that you mean Sweet Poison. I strongly recommend that you also buy Sweet Poison Quit Plan which contains a lot of very helpful suggestions for carrying out your intention to avoid ingesting fructose.  Later it would be worth reading Big Fat Lies too.

There are moves afoot to require manufacturers to provide more detailed information in the Nutritional Information Panels. Meantime it's probably near enough to assume that "sugars"  means mostly cane sugar (sucrose) and therefore 50% fructose. David's advice is to aim for foods with less than 2% "sugars". Yoghurt and most dairy products are OK to about 5% because that represents the amount of lactose (milk sugar) which is metabolized as glucose, and therefore is safe.

The other thing to watch for in the ingredients listing is the various other sugars. Some of these are OK and some are not - see Page 55 of SPQP.  Many of them sound alike. For example:
Acceptable: dextrose, glucose, lactose, malt, maltose,
Unacceptable: agave, fructose, golden syrup, honey, maltitol, mannitol, maple syrup, molasses, sorbitol, sucrose

Please don't tell me malt is OK or I will eat it by the spoonful from the tin!!!
