Hello, I am currently 52 yrs old, single working mama, and weigh too much and have weighed too much since I was adolescent. Got about 40 kilos to use and currently doing the Michelle Bridges 12WBT. Have only lost 4 kilos in 8 weeks so it's very slow. My brother however read the Sweet Poison book and has lost double that in the same time frame. So I am interested to do it and I was heartened to see (after reading the guides) that most of my food choices for the family have been relatively low-sugar. Obviously a lot of room for improvement though! I have insulin resistance and low thyroid function, both for which I am on medication.

My biggest problem is my 12 year old son who has such a limited range of food choices (he's slightly special needs) that to get him to eat anything is tough. And he's very addicted to junk food (read: chicken nuggets, fries, soft drinks, of which he only eats once per week at most) and high-sugar cereals. I buy the low sugar, and he just adds more :(. I personally think a better diet would go a long way to assisting him with his learning issues and his diet is reasonably good compared to other kids I know, I bake everything from scratch, use organic wherever possible but he loves homemade cakes, cookies, pancakes etc - we don't buy flavoured yoghurts, snack barsm juices or soft drinks, and we do eat rye bread and so forth.

I guess I need to get reading the recipes to see where I can make subtle changes hopefully his pernickity tastebuds won't notice!!

i understand that after the withdrawal period [if you have one] you can substitute 2x dextrose/glucose of 1x sucrose [cane sugar] in cooking.

Having a son with special needs will make it difficult. But he seems to also like things you cook, so you can win there by substitution. Maybe the junk food could be held out as a celebratory  treat or reward for comforming to your ideas.

    Welcome Meredith

My sister is doing the Michelle bridges challenge too although finding it very hard to stick too and so far very little results.. I do not envy her and are glad I am off the diet train for ever.. Reading Davids books has done wonders for changing my mindset when it comes to dieting.. Dont diet.. Low fat just means more sugar..

I wanted to say stick with this plan for your whole family.. Special needs included.. I also have a special needs child who has issues with swallowing food & allergies to egg fish & nuts so this makes it hard to find suitable food options hence a very limited menu for him.. After he was addicted to commercial yogurts and snack custards with huge sugar amounts I have been able to get him off all that and onto homemade Sugar free yogurt & dextrose custard.. Everything else is eaten in natural form.. Mainly veggies & meat with fruit used to manage constipation..  Other than a tough week of withdrawals for him we have not looked back.

Good luck on your journey & look forward to reading back your first entry down the track when your 40kgs lighter & feeling fabulous!!

    Leanne x
