Too good to be true...??

    Hi all,

I'm a new member and went cold turkey 10 days ago and can't believe how simple it has been...

The only 'side effect' - and I'm not even 100% sure if it is, is an annoying head cold feeling with tickly, blocked noise & slightly sore throat which kicked in on day 6. The reason I'm wondering if it is a side effect is because I'm pretty sure it was mentioned in the Quit Plan and I NEVER get sick, literally.

I made vanilla ice cream and a chocolate cake on day 6 and soooo delicious! Certainly not floury and un-sweet (for want of a better description!) like DG suggested they might be. I actually think I will cut back some of the dextrose in my next batch of ice cream as it was probably a tad too over the top for my taste buds.

Probably my biggest change has been dairy and fats. I have been a soy drinker for years because someone told me dairy can make you muccousy and I had a perpetual throat clearing issue as i always felt like there was a bit of phlegm caught and switching away from dairy seemed to stop this. I was a bit hesitant to come back to dairy but 10 days on consuming full cream organic/biodynamic milk and cream and not a single throat clearing cough! Perhaps it was fructose...? Its pretty exciting as I know soy is desperately unhealthy particularly for women but was a bit caught at what to do. My other wrestle is using products like butter and cream..all those calories! But I have to say it has been so refreshing and pretty exciting to introduce the 'naughty' foods back into daily mea.

Now for a couple of queries...I am trying to wrap my head around the sugar % thing...I find most labels wont give me a percentage but just grams per 100 grams - logic tells me I convert to % myself..i.e 5 gm sugar in 100 gm is 5%..? correct? And i've been seeing in other posts the limit is 2% yes? I'm not sure why I have 5% in my head but have been following that...woops. Most products have been around 2-3 gm per 100gm so dont think too much extra damage done.

Is there a daily limit on consumptuon of dextrose baked treats or will my body just tell me when its enough? I feel a bit guilty eating the ice cream (always my weakness) as it tastes so damn good it cant seriously be allowed!!! Its a really confusing feeling! I know the commercial brands of ice cream are 'bad' foods and so just accept that when i choose to eat them i am doing the wrong thing so its all back to front to be ok to eat this delicious home made stuff! Seriously if this is how life needs to be, surrounded by these delicious recipes and no fructose, then happy days I say!!! I dont mind giving up soy milk and commercial tomato sauce!

Now somebody please make my day & just confirm that I have it right....it really is this easy and not too good to be true...!?

    xx

    Dear xx :-)

The whole point about the dairy products, calories etc etc  is that once your appetite-control system is working properly again when freed from fructose contamination, you will only ingest what you need, including the fat you need..

If you deliberately override this appetite-control system (aka have a pig-out) you will certainly increase your blood lipids and sugar etc.

You may do this  at a party  - DG says "party food is for parties". But if you go easy in the days following the party you will soon be back in balance.

You may also do it for emotional reasons (aka "comfort food"). If this becomes a serious problem perhaps you would need to see a counsellor.

Most people find that their desire for sweet things fades away in fairly short order. While DG says soy products are not good for you ( Big Fat Lies p208-210 ) there is no obligation to revert to full-cream dairy products. I like FC milk on cereals and in custard, but still prefer Lite milk in tea, coffee etc.

The Nutrition Information Labels show grams-per-serve and they indicate the serve size. And they show grams-per-100-grams.  The latter is identical to a percentage - "centage" being Latin for 100. So just ignore the g/serve and check the g/100g.

Because sucrose is a double molecule of glucose-&-fructose, 2% sucrose = 1% fructose. So if you take in 100g of 1% fructose you have only copped 1g and your daily allowance is 10g.  So most people use "2% sugars" as a useful guide to avoid carting DG's books around when shopping.

The manufacturers are not obliged to tell you what individual "sugars"  are included in that term. But as a general rule you won't go far wrong if you assume that they comprise half fructose.

The 5% you refer to may be yoghurt . . . 4.7% is lactose (milk sugar) which metabolizes as glucose ans so is kosher. I suppose this may also apply to other dairy products which have sugars in them but you would need to check the ingredients list that it wasn't sucrose or fructose being added to sweeten it.

You do need to be careful of "low fat" products. When they remove the fat the flavour goes with it. They replace it with sugar and salt. So you need to check the sugar content carefully. We have been conned for decades into thinking  that low-fat is good for us but it actually a load of old rubbish. A recent meta study of 16 studies showed that 11 of them could find "no strong evidence" of a link between saturated fat and cardio-vascular disease (CVD).  DG and others treat this subject at length in their books.

The other thing you need to watch for is hidden sugar, especially in processed foods. The names of many of the sugars sound similar but they are not all equally "good"  or "bad". I take a photocopy of DG's lists from Sweet Poison Quit Plan  with me when shopping:  Pages 55 & 189; plus `170 for sweeteners.

BTW there is an excellent source of food analysis in a quasi-government organization called  "Food Standards Australia & New Zealand". It is a mine of useful information. http://www.foodstandards.gov.au/consumerinformation/nuttab2010/nuttab2010onlinesearchabledatabase/onlineversion.cfm

Good luck on your journey to freedom :-)

Your wonderful John :-)  So put simply - it really is that simple!!
I've also seen a bit of feed back & various personal journeys on Facebook Sweet Poison site and can identify with some so suspect I will not drop weight quickly or easily and will have to tweak but just going on 2 weeks into fructose free I will follow my taste buds and appetite for now and see how i balance out over the next month.
It seems there are various journeys attached to this way of life and i guess they are all pretty personal and no set outcomes or results.
Thanks again...and my name is Kimmy, I forgot to sign off properly last time :-)  xx

Just saying I really enjoyed this exchange between Kimmy and John.  Thank you to both of you.  Hassanah Wilkinson.
